Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River was built in 1345, replacing two previous bridges that had been swept away in floods. It originally housed butcher shops on the bridge, for ten practical reason that the discards could just be tossed into the river. However, the smell became so bad that a decree ordered their replacement with goldsmiths, who continue to sell jewelry on the bridge today.
